Undocumented students push for in-state tuition at Wake Tech

Posted: Updated:

A total of five undocumented students were arrested Thursday afternoon while protesting tuition rates at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh.

In North Carolina, undocumented students have to pay out-of-state tuition.

A group of protestors are fighting against these policies.

A spokesperson for Wake Tech said administrators learned a group was planning a protest of admission policies on the community college's main campus. The school informed protestors of a solicitation request form that must be submitted three business days in advance.

The form was emailed to the protest organizer, who then agreed to postpone the event, the school said.

At 2 p.m., around 40 people began to protest on the main campus and were asked to leave the area by campus police.

A release sent by Wake Tech said Marco Antonio Cervantes Garcia, Jose Jared Rico Benandes, Cruz A. Nunez Jimenez, Eduardo Ulises Barajas Perez and Mario Valladares Salgado stood by the admissions office demanding in state tuition.

The protestors were arrested and charged with second degree trespassing by campus police after refusing to leave the area.

"I'm a North Carolina student, all North Carolina students should pay in-state tuition," said Nunez.

He has been in North Carolina since he was four, and is about to graduate from Chapel Hill High School.

"North Carolina is basically my home," he said.

The NC Dream Team organized the protest.

A spokesperson from the North Carolina Community College System says they do not plan on changing the policy.
