BBB warns of deceptive solicitation in Columbus

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Better Business Bureau says it is investigating a deceptive solicitation received by a Columbus business.

"BBB has been alerted by an accredited business that it received a solicitation in the form of an invoice from a company named US Telecom," the organization says in a news release. "The solicitation has a disclaimer that it is a solicitation; however it may mislead businesses into paying the charges shown on the solicitation."

The two page document looks like a bill, which has officials from the attorney general's offices in New York, North Dakota and Missouri asking US Telecom to cease "deceptive practices."

If you receive solicitations such as the one from US Telecom, the BBB advises:

• Make sure you read the entire letter/fax; disclaimers are often hidden somewhere within the text
• Do not pay unless you are certain your company wishes to employ the services of the soliciting company
Contact Columbus' BBB for assistance.

The Columbus company that initially received the solicitation was not publicly identified.
