Sheriff: Man kills brother in Crawford

Posted: Updated:
CRAWFORD, Ala. -

FIRST ON 3: A Crawford man is dead after an altercation with his brother, Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor confirms to WRBL News 3.

Larry Smith shot his brother with a shotgun after the two got into an altercation at their sister-in-law's house, Sheriff Taylor tells News 3's David Hurst outside the home where the shooting happened. The victim, Archie Smith Sr., died from the gunshot wound. Both men are in their fifties.

Larry Smith lives next door to the sister-in-law, where the shooting took place. Archie Smith Sr. lived down the road, a few houses down. Friends say Archie was taking care of his sister-in-law after her husband died of cancer.

Taylor says several other family members witnessed the shooting inside the home on The Lane, a road off Highway 80.

"That's why I say this is a horrible circumstance, because family members were here," Sheriff Taylor told News 3 at scene.

Those witnesses are expected to be interviewed by authorities.

The cause of the altercation is still under investigation. Russell County Sheriff's deputies responded to the residence around 5 p.m. and took Larry into custody. No one else was injured in the shooting.
