Sturm Ruger to open new gun factory in NC town

MAYODAN, N.C. -

A North Carolina town already home to America's largest gun manufacturer is welcoming another famous name in the business.

Sturm, Ruger & Co. said Tuesday it will open a new factory in Mayodan to meet gun demands that have spiked since Congress and some states sought to toughen gun controls. The community is headquarters for Freedom Group Inc., which owns Bushmaster, Remington and other brands.

The plant is expected to employ 470 people in Rockingham County, where the unemployment rate is 10.3 percent.

Southport, Conn.-based Sturm, Ruger will open its third factory in a former textile plant in Mayodan and could receive more than $9 million in tax breaks.

Connecticut's firearms industry has been embattled since 26 students and staff were shot and killed at a Newtown school last year.
