Duke president to appear on 'The Colbert Report'

DURHAM, N.C. -

Duke University President Richard Brodhead will appear as a guest on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" with Stephen Colbert.

Brodhead will do the interview Thursday.  He was asked to be on the show and discuss a recent report on K-12 education prepared by the National Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences, which Brodhead co-chaired.

"I presume (Colbert's) asked me on there to talk about the report," Brodhead told the Duke Chronicle. "But as you know, he doesn't totally stick to any topic."

The report has received a lot of attention since it was released in June. It found that not enough people see the importance in a humanities education.

The episode with Brodhead airs this Thursday night at 11:30 p.m.

The commission was created in 2010 and its 53 members included Yo-Yo Ma and film maker George Lucas.

Brodhead, in an interview on the Duke website, said, "The problem people found was not that the faucet was leaking or the light bulb was broken. The problem we found was that the humanities are undersold. The perception of the values of the humanities has eroded to the point where people think they can just dismiss them."

According to the report, "At the very moment when China and some European nations are seeking to replicate the U.S. model of broad education— as a stimulus to innovation and a source of social cohesion — we are instead narrowing our focus and abandoning our sense of what education has been and should continue to be — our sense of what makes America great."
