The South Carolina Highway Patrol has announced that a trooper was killed on Sunday night in an off-duty incident. Lance Corporal Frank Murphy, Troop Four (Post C - Chester/Fairfield), originally joined the South Carolina Highway Patrol in 1977. He retired in 2001, but returned to the Patrol in 2005. He was well-known and very active in the Chester community.
Murphy was killed in an accident while making household repairs. The accident is under investigation by the Chester County Sheriff's Office and Coroner's Office.
"This is a very sad day for the Department of Public Safety family," said South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) Director Leroy Smith. "Frank Murphy had dedicated his life to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and truly loved his job. He was well-respected in his community and with his fellow troopers."
Lance Corporal Murphy was 58-years-old. The South Carolina Highway Patrol will release memorial information at the wishes of Murphy's family.
"Our troopers are very saddened by the loss of one of their own," said Colonel Mike Oliver, SCHP Commander. "The Highway Patrol is a family and when we lose someone within our ranks, it takes a tremendous toll on us all. We will do all that we can to support Frank's family during this difficult time."
