Monday the City of North Charleston, hosts from radio station WEZL, and fans honored Lowcountry native Darius Rucker by naming the road leading to the North Charleston Coliseum after him.
The idea came from TJ Phillips, and Ric Rush of the WEZL Morning Crew. North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey heard the conversation, and called into the show to say he wanted to make it happen.
Summey called it a "no-brainer", saying the Hootie and the Blowfish front man, turned country music superstar never forgot his roots.
"It has been great to see Darius Rucker become a first class and world renowned musician, while always embracing the Lowcountry," said Mayor Summey. "However, it gives me a larger sense of pride to see Darius come back to the Lowcountry, time and time again, and put forth a meaningful effort to make our community a better place. Over the years his goodwill has truly benefited a countless number of our residents, and for that we are ever thankful. It is a pleasure and honor to recognize Darius Rucker, someone who has never forgot the Lowcountry."
Monday the city unveiled the sign at a breakfast in the Montague Terrace at the Coliseum with fans who won contests to be part of the ceremony.
Rucker said it is an "honor" to be recognized for things he does because he thinks they are the right thing to do.
"It's crazy," Rucker said. "You never do anything with the intention of getting something in return, so I never expect anything but when I heard they wanted to name a street after me, I have to admit I was flattered. I'm truly honored that they're doing that. It's massive…just incredible. I'm totally over the moon about the whole thing. It's just amazing to be recognized like that."
During the ceremony, South Carolina Stingrays President, Rob Concannon presented Rucker with a jersey, and a bobblehead that will be given away at the January 4th game at the coliseum. Rucker surprised Concannon by offering to sing the national anthem that night.
"I will be there", said Rucker.
After the ceremony, Rucker hung out and took pictures with every fan in attendance.
