GOLDSBORO, N.C. -

Goldsboro police arrested a man Wednesday in connection with a violent claw hammer attack that occurred in July.

Jerry Parks, 39, was arrested in connection with a July hammer attack on Leodis Hamlin Jr. A warrant for attempted first-degree murder was issued on July 27, 2013.

After receiving a Crime Stoppers tip, officers went to a residence in the 900 block of Fifth Street where they found Parks hiding in a closet. Parks surrendered and was arrested without incident.

Parks is accused of hitting Hamlin twice in the head with a claw hammer after a verbal conflict between the two escalated. After Hamlin fell to the ground unconscious, Parks is alleged to have stomped on his head with his foot several times before fleeing the scene.

Since the attack, Hamlin has been treated and released from the hospital.

Parks was placed in Wayne County Jail under no bond. His first appearance was scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday.
