Commission Denies Request To Rezone Property For Nursing Home

Augusta, GA -

An Augusta neighborhood is saying no to a plan for a personal care home off of Walton Way. Tuesday night, Augusta Commissioners heard a request to rezone a piece of land off of Beman Street to be used as a nursing home. But opponents say there is much more to the story.

The Augusta Planning Commission denied the property owner's request to rezone the property to be used as a nursing home. The property owner appealed that decision to Augusta Commissioners, but not without a fight from neighbors.

Rayford Mills asked Augusta commissioners to deny Mike Samadi's request to rezone property on Beman Street to a multiple-family residence. Samadi says he wants to to turn the home into a personal care home for the elderly, but there are several homeowners who have problems with that.

"That's something that we definitely do not want. No rezoning. Because we feel like rezoning would actually set precedent in that area," Mills says.

But Mills says that isn't the only problem he has with the plans. During the commission meeting, Mills showed commissioners pictures of what he says was illegal work going on inside of the planned personal care home.

"Putting in the electrical panels without licensing. Putting in unlicensed sprinkler systems and things of that nature. It's just nothing but a death trap," Mills says.

With a recommendation from the planning commission, Augusta commissioners denied Samadi's request to rezone the property. License and inspection officials told commissioners that they ordered Samadi to stop work inside of the home because work was being done without permits.

Samadi says he hasn't done anything illegal inside of the house. He says most of the homeowners are creating lies about him.

"Because they don't want me to succeed. That's all there is," Samadi says.

Samadi also says many homeowners are confusing the personal care home with a rehab center, but Mills says that isn't the case.

"I mean. Sure. There needs to be places. You know. Resident homes and things for people of that nature," Mills says.

Samadi says he has other plans for the home on Beman Road. He also tells us he already owns one personal care home in Richmond County.
