Augusta Commissioner Says Sheriff Needs To Push Patrols Downtown, Not Cleanup Crews

Should cleanup crews join deputies in downtown Augusta?

Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree is proposing taxing property owners downtown in order to hire additional deputies. Some property owners are also suggesting the addition of cleanup crews. Commissioners supported the idea of the extra patrols, so how do they feel about extra maintenance?

"The Sheriff Department's job is to protect us, not to make sure the environment is clean. That's not one of their responsibilities and I would much rather see the Sheriff's Office on curtailing crime and so forth, and let the city come up with how the city is going to be clean and so forth. I think that needs to be two separate entities," says Commissioner Bill Lockett.

Even if a majority of property owners agree to the tax district for extra patrols and a cleanup program, Augusta Commissioners get the final on whether the program goes forward.
