Research shows that finding cancer early is one way to help patients survive. Until now, detecting lung cancer in its very early stages has been nearly impossible.
University Hospital is helping by offering Lung Cancer CT screenings. One local woman is getting the help she needs because it was found early.

Rosemary Motsinger is a health care professional who has a lot going on at work and inside her body, "They did find a 4mm spot, and they said because it was only 4mm we would watch it."
The spot they found was in her lung. Dr. Lynn Brannen, a Pulmonologist at University Hospital says thanks to new technology, lung cancers can be found early with the use of this machine. He performs CT scans in order to detect lung cancer.
Dr. Brannen, " Last year a study was published that showed that screening CT scan can lower mortality for patients who've had a smoking history."
The lung cancer screening program at University is for former smokers who are 55 to 75 years old. It's a tool they use to find the disease early.
Dr. Brannen, " the recent study that's published shows about a 20 percent reduction in mortality with the lung cancer screening."
The lung screening is quick, easy and painless. The patient lies down on the table, which moves them into the scanner. After a minute or two the patient is removed and the scan is done.
Dr. Brannen, "the technique we use for this screening is called a low dose technique. So the amount of radiation you get is very very small, about equivalent to a chest xray."
Rosemary, " I made some poor decisions when I was younger, I didn't smoke, I have quit...and I've been quit for 11 years."
Now she's HEALTHIER, MORE ACTIVE AND TAKING BETTER CARE OF HER BODY. The spot found on her lungs is so small, that Dr.'s will watch if to see if it grows, however, Rosemary is hoping that her new lease on life will mean a healthier one.
