RALEIGH, N.C. -

The North Carolina Medical Examiner's Office released an autopsy Monday of a Wake County jail inmate who died after an altercation last month.

According to the report, Shon Demetrius McClain, 40, of Apex, died from head, neck, spinal and brain damage sustained during a fight with detention officer, Markeith Council, on June 4.

"Based on the autopsy and investigative findings, it is our opinion that the cause of death is blunt force," the report said.

"At this point (McClain's) family wants people to know that he had loved ones. He had a life and he meant something and so for him to have such a brutal ending to his life -- they just want to see some justice done," said Jessie Jeffers, attorney for McClain's family.

At the request of the Wake County Sheriff's Office, the State Bureau of Investigation conducted an independent investigation of the incident. The SBI has completed that investigation and handed its' report over to Wake County District Attorney, Colon Willoughby.

Willoughby will review the SBI's report and determine whether Council used excessive force and if criminal charges are warranted.

Willoughby said he expects to complete his review within a few weeks after he has time to go over evidence and talk to the family and witnesses involved.

Council is on administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

McClain was serving time for a misdemeanor charge and failing to appear on drug paraphernalia charges.

According to the Department of Public Safety, McClain's convictions include possession of stolen goods, breaking and entering, larceny, indecent liberty with a child, failing to register as a sex offender, and obstructing justice.
