Nearly two months after Augusta started once-a-week garbage service, complaints continue to roll in.
One Lumpkin Road woman told Augusta Commissioners she went weeks without garbage service, causing her to spend $60 to hire someone to take her trash to the Augusta Landfill.
And a local garbage hauler says he's been contracted by more than 200 residents who want to pay him to provide a second day of the week pickup.
"We could start with two to three hundred customers, just in one part of town. Up in the Hill section, where we used to pickup, we're just going to see what happens. I don't think they can't tell me I can't do it, it's free enterprise. I think some of the way...the way they were talking, they're going to try and fight me on that, but I'm not going to worry about it." Says Bill Polonus of Augusta Disposal.
Landfill officials say, under the current contract, the two companies picking up trash in Augusta have exclusive rights to city garbage customers.
Commissioners want to hear from the city's attorney whether the contract can be changed.
