DEVELOPING ON 6: Fish Kill in Savannah River Near Betty's Branch

Posted: Updated:
Columbia County, GA -

Water is being tested tonight after hundreds of fish are found dead today at Betty's Branch in Evans.

Savannah Riverkeeper is warning you NOT to eat fish from that area tonight.

Officials are still trying to figure out what happened but say this is most likely because of a lack of oxygen or a toxic chemical overflow after recent heavy rains.

They're concerned this may be happening in other areas of the Savannah river and ask that you report any fish deaths to the Riverkeeper.

Betty's Branch is the same place where hundreds of kayakers and boaters paddled down the Savannah River for Benderdinker.

We'll have more on this story coming up at 11.
