Alligator killed after eating dog to be put on display at museum

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

The alligator killed for eating a dog in Jacksonville is slated to be put on display at a local museum.

WNCT reports the reptile's body will be put on display at the Onlsow County Environmental Education Center and Library on N.C. Highway 210 in Sneads Ferry.

There is no word on when the alligator will actually go on display since the center is currently under construction with plans to reopen in November or December.

The alligator attacked an 80 pound Husky at the Mill Creek Green portion of Henderson Green at Henderson Drive and River Street on Tuesday night.

Jacksonville police shot the alligator three times with a high powered rifle.

The county hopes the alligator will teach visitors the importance of respecting an animal's boundaries.

"If we see these animals and can learn from them, then that makes it all that more important to care for them," Onslow County Spokesperson Lisa Whitman-Grice told WNCT.

The alligator is at a taxidermy office in Johnston County where it is being stuffed, a process which could take 10 months to a year.
