For Columbia County, Bass Pro Shops is a big catch. But, for Augusta, it's the one that got away.
Five years before Bass Pro Shops announced it would build a store in Columbia County, the company said it was coming to the Village at Riverwatch, in Augusta.
But, after the economy hit bottom in 2009, the company's plans changed, and store did not pan out.
Now, Augusta's loss is Columbia County's gain and for the city, it's close but no Bass Pro Shops.
"The fact that they're in the community, at all, is a great win for the greater region here...such the potential we have here, the opportunities that we have here. It would have been nice here. It's not quite as nice, but it's real nice to have them close," says City Administrator Fred Russell.
Though Bass Pro Shops worked closely with the city in the past, both Russell and Mayor Copenhaver say they did not get any advanced notice about the Columbia County announcement from the company.
