Record Rainfall Making Lawns Moldy

Posted: Updated:

Sid Mullis, Richmond County Extension Coordinator says, "We've had a lot of funguses getting along. We've had one called slime mold."

Have you taken a close look at your lawn lately? It probably looks a lot different than it did before the rains came…it might even be black in some spots.

Sid Mullis, Richmond County Extension Coordinator says, "Actually gets a gray to black looking moldy appearance on the grass blades. It actually will rub off on your hands. The solution to that is to just wash it off. It won't hurt the grass, it just kinda looks unsightly."

Sid Mullis is seeing algae almost everywhere he looks.

Sid Mullis, Richmond County Extension Coordinator says, "That crusty appearance that grows right on top of the ground and I've seen that in a lot places."

But you would think after a three year drought of nearly 40 inches below average rainfall that all that rain would be a good thing. Mullis says it was, for about a day or two.

Sid Mullis, Richmond County Extension Coordinator says, "Initially the rain was a blessing and you didn't have to water and the rainwater makes the grass look so much greener."

Turns out it's not just the rain hurting the grass. It's also a lack of sun, too.

Sid Mullis, Richmond County Extension Coordinator says, "In the last two or three weeks I've noticed that the grass, particularly the Bermuda has gotten a lighter more off green color simply from the fact that it's not getting enough sun."

So what did the rain really do to your lawn?

Sid Mullis, Richmond County Extension Coordinator says, "Basically all the nitrogen and fertilizer has been leached out of the soil so a lot of lawns are starving for nutrition."

Good news is that the past week has been very dry, especially compared to the beginning of the month and if this keeps up Mullis says your lawn will be seeing a big improvement soon.
