North Augusta Department of Public Safety officials say a man has been arrested after fleeing from an officer, and crashing into an apartment building.
Investigators say, Tuesday night around 10:21 p.m., an officer attempted to stop a vehicle traveling south on Georgia Avenue for speeding. He initiated a traffic stop and successfully stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and West Buena Vista Avenue. He approached the vehicle and started his explanation as to why he had stopped the driver when the driver put the vehicle back in gear and accelerated quickly from the immediate scene.
The officer, and another nearby officer, pursued the suspect's vehicle until it lost control at the intersection of West Buena Vista Avenue and Georgetown Drive attempting to make a left turn. The suspect vehicle then left the roadway, drove up a small inclined bank of grass and into a quadiplex apartment building located on the 800 block of Georgetown Drive. The suspect's vehicle came to rest in the living room area of 812 Georgetown Villas, occupied by a 77-year-old woman.
The woman was treated at the scene for minor injuries sustained from flying debris caused by the impact and later transported to a local hospital for further medical attention. The adjoining apartment, 814, was vacant at the time of the incident and no one was hurt.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as 25-year-old Earl Jamahl Spencer, of Augusta, Georgia. He was treated and released at the scene for minor facial abrasions sustained in his collision with the building. Spencer was placed under arrest for multiple traffic offenses and eventually transported to the Aiken County Detention Center where incarcerated.
Earl Spencer has been charged with DUI, Failure to Stop for Blue Lights & Siren, and Driving without a License.
