Kendrick High School earns an outstanding high school award for academic improvement. The award was presented by the Southern Regional Education Board and is part of the "High Schools that Work" program. Kendrick High School students have improved in several academic areas.

Principal Dr. Alonzo James said there have even gains in ninth grade literature, American literature, science, and social studies. He says this award is going to be a jumpstart for future academic successes.

"Our number one goal is to come out of priority status, and we want to become a high performing award type school," said Dr. James. Priority status schools are identified as among the lowest performing 5 percent title one schools. Dr. James wants to get Kendrick High School in the top 5 percent. He says that positive behavior support and a rigorous testing process allowed Kendrick's students to improve their test scores.

"We want when they get to the actual test that it's not difficult for them so we test them harder along the way," said Dr. James. He says the response to intervention or RTI was the biggest help for Kendrick students.

"It helped within our test scores. It helped with our retention rate for ninth and tenth graders," said James. Those retention rates were down by 14 percent for ninth graders and 17 percent for tenth graders. The Southern Regional Education Board has only served three high schools in the Muscogee County area. In the upcoming school year Kendrick High School will be the only high school they will serve.

The boards goals it to equip all students with the knowledge and skills needed to graduate and succeed in the future. James says this honor will motivate everyone at Kendrick to succeed at the highest level.

"We say this is going to be our explosion year because Kendrick does have some rich traditions and our theme and our motto is returning back to greatness and we always tell everybody it's great to be a Cherokee," said James. They have implemented their own summer school, academic Saturday programs, and after school programs for their students.
