A probation officer is recovering and a man who was on probation is dead after a shooting in downtown Augusta. Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten has identified the man as 29-year-old Travis Berrian, of North Augusta.

Just after 4:30pm, dozens of Richmond County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the scene of the shooting at the Augusta Probation Office on Greene Street.

"My daughter called me around 5 o'clock and said that they had breaking news about a shooting down here. She immediately called me because we know a person who works here. And we were not sure if it was her or not," says Julia Johnson, of Augusta.

Because the shooting took place on state property, the GBI was called in to conduct the investigation.

"What I can tell you at this point is that there was a probationer who had been called into the office. That probationer had active warrants on him. The probation office was in the process of taking him into custody. When they began taking him into custody, a struggled ensued and during that struggle shots were fired," says GBI Special Agent In Charge Patrick Morgan.

Investigators say the man on probation and a female probation officer were shot during the struggle. They say the man died and that the probation officer is recovering at Georgia Regents Medical Center. Investigators couldn't comment on who the shooter was, but they say more details should be released on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Johnson says she just wants to know that her friend is okay. "My emotions are like a roller coaster right now. I just keep trying to call her cell phone just hoping that she answers. And she hasn't yet," she says.

Investigators haven't released the name of the probation officer yet. An autopsy on Berrian is scheduled for Wednesday.
