It has been used by people throughout history. for both culinary and medicinal purposes. But can vinegar cure diabetes, lower blood pressure and stop a woman's menstrual cycle? Health and wellness expert and author Dr. Ann Kulze says vinegar has a great reputation.
"Vinegar is touted as a cure all for all sorts of things." Dr Ann says
But she says it sours when it comes to fixing your failing health.
"It really is an urban legend, modern folklore."
She says people should think of vinegar as a health food, because that's what it is.
"Vinegar is a wonderful condiment that can add flavor to our foods without adding much calories but there is no scientific evidence that it has any healing properties."
Dr Ann says researchers are tracking the affect of vinegar on blood sugar levels of some people.
"If you take in some vinegar along with a meal that contains some carbohydrates that it can slow the digestion of starch . So the rise in blood glucose that can occur after eating can be mitigated a little bit. But it is by no means a cure for diabetes or weight or anything like that."
And be warned vinegar also comes with certain health risks.
"It can be dangerous for people who take diuretics ... medication ... Or people who are on insulin and people who are on heart medicines."
It has survived through the ages but vinegar won't improve the quality of your health but it might improve the taste of your salad.
