A prominent Augusta businessman and civic leader has died. Solomon Walker the second passed on Saturday.
Known in the community as "Sol", he was the grandson of one of the founders of Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company. It would become the first African American Insurance company in the state of Georgia. After graduating from Morehouse College, Sol Walker worked his way up to become the company CEO and a major contributor to the local community.
Longtime friend, Jimmy Carter, says, "he would head drives in the churches and other organizations. I know he was instrumental in working with Lucy Laney to help raise money for band uniforms at one time. Nevertheless, he did so much around town."
Sol Walker leaves a wife and several children. Funeral arrangements for Sol Walker have not been completed.
