The Augusta Sports Council (ASC) announces that registration for the 2014 Georgia Regents University (GRU) Augusta Half Marathon and 10K is now open.
The event, including the health and fitness expo, is slated for February 22-23, 2014.
The GRU Augusta Half Marathon is in its sixth year with last year's addition of the 10K component. The 2013 event included 1,489 registered runners. The event also included over 350 volunteers. Direct visitor spending totaled $116,242.
This year's course tours through Downtown Augusta and historic Summerville neighborhood. The start and finish line will be amended with a new expo location, to be announced at a later date. The course will be similar to 2013 with minor changes.
ASC CEO, Brinsley Thigpen says, "The Augusta Sports Council is pleased to organize its signature event which improves the quality of life of our community. We are excited to incorporate the new start and finish location and execute a first-rate event."
The Medals for Miles presented by The Family Y will also be included in this year's event. Medals for Miles is a program designed for fourth and fifth grade age students where kids complete a total of 12 miles in any daily distance before February 22, 2014. Kids will then participate in a 1.1 fun run at the health and fitness expo on February 22, 2014 to complete a half marathon and earn a GRU Augusta Half Marathon participation medal.
The ASC is proud to have Georgia Regents University again as this year's title sponsor. "Georgia Regents University and Health System is committed to promoting an active and healthy lifestyle in our community," said David Brond, Senior Vice President for Communications and Marketing at GRU. "Along with Georgia Regents Sports Medicine we are excited to continue our partnership with the Augusta Sports Council to support this annual experience that enhances the quality of life and economic well-being of Augusta and the growing number of participants who make this a destination event."
