UPDATED: The Duchess of Cambridge, better known as Princess Kate, has presented
Prince William with an 8.6 pound son. The latest royal is now third in line to be king of England.
In England -- the baby watch is on.
The Duchess of Cambridge -- better known as Princess Kate -- is in the hospital and in labor.
Prince William and his wife are about to become new parents.
And Great Britain is about to get a new heir to the throne.
Abc's Nick Schifrin is on watch for the royal tot.:
Outside the hospital, the world is waiting.
More than 100 reporters from dozens of countries.
And outside Buckingham Palace, thousands of wellwishers.
They're all waiting for the world's most expectant couple.
"I'm excited. I'm like a washing machine, I'm spinning! I'm on full spin."
"It's a girl.. I'm predicting a girl.. ha.. ha..."
"A boy, actually.... hopefully a boy!"
Kate's having a natural birth.
She doesn't know the baby's sex. But if it's a girl, it will make history.
Robert Lacey is a Royal Historian, "The really historic thing is that whether this baby is a boy or a girl we
know that it is destined, because of a recent change in the law to be the future, uh, king or queen."
"May we see your son? Your royal highness!"
"Kate's giving birth in the same hospital where Diana, the mother-in-law she never knew, introduced the world to William."
On the night he was born -- a nation cheered the official announcement.
That tradition will continue with the new baby.
"Nobody does that traditional pomp and ceremony better than the British. I mean, at least that's what we think"
But William and Kate are also securing the monarchy's future.
They're beginning the family they've always wanted - and as evidenced by today's crowds, their popularity will only grow.
And here's just a slice of how many will celebrate Kate and William taking the monarchy forward:
Canada will light up Niagara Falls -- pink or blue, depending upon the gender.
Church bells and a 62 gun salute in London.
And an estimated 3 million bottles of champagne will be purchased in the UK alone.
So safe to say -- this will be a very happy country...
