Teens, house parties, and summer sounds like a combination for fun. But in Augusta recently, these three things have been a combination for crime.
Brandon Simmons, Kensington Drive resident, tells us "I heard two pops and I thought it was firecrackers. When I came out I didn't see nothing."
Hours later, Simmons says he learned it was a shooting that claimed the life of 19-year-old Marquez Eubanks and critically injured another at this house on Kensington Drive. This is something Richmond County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Michael McDaniel says is a common occurrence this time of year.
"We have a few situations when school is not in session where we've had shootings or large fights at these house parties or what they call block parties," Sgt. McDaniel explains.
Simmons tells us crimes like this one make him concerned for his family's safety.
"It's a community where we all know each other. We're all connected. And for these people to just move here and cause all this ruckus, it's nerve wracking," he says.
Sgt. McDaniel says the sheriff's office aims to calm the nerves of anyone near such house parties. But, they need your help.
"First and foremost, you need to notify the sheriff's office so we can prepare ourselves to have the deputies in that area to show a strong, strong police presence," he assures.
A presence that Simmons says is needed not just during house parties, but all the time. And Sgt. McDaniel says Richmond County deputies will do all they can to keep Garden City residents safe.
He adds,"we may not be right there when something happens, but we're gonna do everything we can to be close."
Sgt. McDaniel tells us this is the Kensington Drive shooting is Richmond County's 9th murder of the year. The investigation is still in the early stages. We will continue to update you as we learn more information here at WJBF News Channel 6.
