The husband of the founder of Compass Academy in Aiken has been arrested and charged with Securities Fraud.
Friday, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced the arrest of Jonathan "Jay" Warren Brooks, of Aiken.
Wilson's office tells WJBF News Channel 6, an arrest warrant was issued for one (1) count of Securities Fraud, a felony which carries a possible punishment of up to 10 years in prison, and/or a fine of not more than $50,000. The warrant alleges Brooks took investment money for an entity called the "Charles Howell Trust", but the entity was fictional and Brooks instead converted the funds for his personal use.
You may remember, Brooks' wife, Tracy Brooks, is involved in a controversy concerning Compass Academy, in Aiken.
At a hearing held in Richland County General Sessions Court, Brooks was assigned a surety bond of $500,000.
The case will be prosecuted by Assistant Deputy Attorney General Creighton Waters and Assistant Attorney General Brian Petrano.
Attorney General Wilson stressed all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in a court of law.
