Lovette appears in court in Duke grad student murder

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Laurence Lovette was in court Friday morning for his involvement in the murder of a Duke graduate student.

Durham police say Lovette and Stephen Oates robbed and killed Abhijit Mahato, 29, inside Mahato's apartment in January 2008.

Lovette's attorney had filed a motion to see the transcripts of Stephen Oates bond hearing. On Friday the judge granted the motion. Lovette's attorney believes there is information in those transcripts that could help Lovette.

Lovette is currently serving a life sentence for the 2008 murder of UNC student body president Eve Carson. That sentence is currently under appeal because he was 17 at the time of the crime.  The United States Supreme Court ruled it is unconstitutional to give an automatic life sentence to someone who was under the age of 18 at the time of a crime.
