FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

The mother of a murdered Fayetteville teen said he snuck out of his house to attend the party where he was shot.

Ashton Foxx, 16, was hit by the gunfire and critically injured. The victim was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he later died.

Keisha Lovett, Foxx's mother, said he rarely caused problems. "He was always silly and happy and full of joy. He was into his basketball. That was his desire," Lovett said. She said Foxx did not have permission to be at the party.

Foxx was a student at Westover High School where he excelled at basketball.

Fayetteville police said the two people involved in the incident had been at a gathering at the apartment on Tatum Drive when a verbal argument began. During the argument, the suspect revealed a gun and fired a shot.

Fayetteville police arrested Tabari Ali Hashim, 23, and charged him with first degree murder.
