Tedesco will not run for second term on Wake Co. school board

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Wake County School Board member John Tedesco said on Wednesday he will not seek a second term.

Tedesco said after a lot of prayer that he's decided to not seek re-election when his term ends in November so he can spend more time with his family.

Tedesco said in a letter to friends and supporters, "we have evaluated the needs of our young family and small business efforts against the heavy demands of public service. I have decided at this time it would be best for our family if I refocused my efforts at home and work during the next few years."

The letter did not mention if he would consider running for office in the future. Tedesco launched an unsuccessful campaign for state superintendent in the 2012 election.

Tedesco was voted into office in 2009 as part of a Republican majority on the school board.

After serving four years on the school board, Tedesco said he was proud of what he and the board accomplished.

In his letter he wrote, "Despite the political turmoil and media frenzy, graduation rates are up, gaps have narrowed, and suspensions are down. Schools are safer. Volunteerism is at an all-time high. Teacher retention is up."

Democrats took power of the board after the 2012 election. Republicans Debra Goldman and Chris Malone resigned from the board leaving Tedesco with Deborah Prickett as the only conservative votes on the school board.

Tedesco ended his letter by saying that Wake County is his "home" and that he's "proud to raise my family here, further our business here, and build our roots here in Wake County."
