Two areas of Columbia County are gaining national attention. According to a web site called "NerdWallet," Evans and Martinez get top honors as two of the best towns in Georgia for young families. Dee Griffin went to Columbia County to see why.
Erin Johnson and her family are from California but relocated to the CSRA two weeks ago. They found Martinez to be the cream of the crop among the peach state's orchard of communities. Johnson explains, "The cost of living is awesome. We are definitely happy about that change."
According to the consumer advocate web site, NerdWallet, she's right on target with her assessment of the area. The web site chose Evans and Martinez for their Public school ratings from GreatSchools, as well as the average home value, cost of home ownership, average income and economic growth. Columbia County Development Authority Executive Director Robbie Bennett says the area is boasting with opportunities for families. Bennett says, "we're in a great community, a great region. We have many opportunities throughout the region and Columbia County has figured out a strong quality education is a key factor for young families. Great outdoor activities and giving them the opportunities to be engaged and involved."
The park behind Evans' library is just one of many in the area that reflect the community's efforts to provide a safe, clean and fun atmosphere for its families. It's a part of the overall landscape of Evans that make it the top choice for parents and kids alike. Parent Jackie Jones says, "we love it here. We love the facilities and the schools, especially the schools. The neighborhoods around here are very nice and family friendly and safe. We like that a lot."
Evans ranked first in the survey by NerdWallet.com while Martinez ranked eighth for best towns in Georgia for young families.
