New Augusta Ronald McDonald House To Help Double The Families

Augusta, GA -

It's a big day for one organization in the CSRA.  Ronald McDonald Charities will break ground on a new state-of-the-art facility.  WJBF News Channel 6's Barclay Bishop reports.

It has been several decades in the making and now it will better help parents from all over.  The Ronald McDonald house is a place for parents to stay when their children are being treated at Children's Hospital of Georgia.

Currently the Ronald McDonald House is on Greene Street, but the new one will be bigger and within walking distance to the hospital.  It will be located where the telemedicine building currently is near Children's.  It will be a 3 story, 28-thousand square foot, 23 bedroom home.  The house they currently have is only 2 stories and 11 bedrooms.

"We're full almost every night.  Last year we served 631 families, 284 couldn't stay with us.  We are not handicap accessible, and we're full.  The house here, we hopefully won't be full all of the time but I think we'll be pretty close to full most nights, we will be totally handicap accessible and 150 yards from the hospital," said Betts Murdison, CEO of Augusta's Ronald McDonald House.

"If you live within 25 miles, you can go home and go to bed at night. We are here for the families who live more than 25 miles from Augusta. This is the Children's Hospital of Georgia.  Kids from all over the state of Georgia come here for medical care.  This is where they can stay. They will have a place to stay.  So they don't have to worry about anything else but taking care of their child," said Murdison.

The $5.8 million project is expected to be complete in the fall of 2014.  The groundbreaking is set for Tuesday morning at 10am.  To donate and help the organization reach its current $1.5 million shortfall, head to their website:
