Johnston Co. man sentenced in connection with Wendell teen's death

SMITHFIELD, N.C. -

A Johnston County man has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and has been sentenced in connection with the death of a 15-year-old from Wendell.

Nickolas Exley died after he was accidentally shot when Robert Furey showed him and a friend his rifle in December 2012. After the weapon discharged, Furey immediately called for help and stated he did not mean to shoot his friend.

Furey pleaded guilty in Johnston County Superior Court Thursday and was sentenced to a minimum of 13 months.

"This was such as tragic case for all the parties involved," said Assistant District Attorney Davis Weddle in a written release. "The victim's family understood that the State could not proceed on anything more than Involuntary Manslaughter based upon the facts, and they were satisfied with the plea and sentence imposed."

Based on a review of the facts in the case, the shooting was ruled unintentional, but negligent.

Exley was a student at Corinth-Holders High School.
