Posted: Updated:
Augusta, GA -

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has notified the City of Augusta that they will be increasing the release from J. Strom Thurmond Dam to 40,000 cubic feet per second. This will cause the river to rise and the creeks in Richmond County to be impacted. This is done in preparation for any effects from Tropical Storm Chantal.

With the river rising, citizens in the Phinizy Swamp area will experience flooding. Lock and Dam park is flooded. Please do not go out to the park. The new boat ramp at the Lock and Dam is under water at this time.

The citizens near Butler Creek, in the Windsor Spring and Meadowbrook area, should monitor conditions and make any necessary preparations for flooding. Some possible impacted areas include, Salem Arms, Caddenwoods, Rosier Road on the Butler Creek side, and Elliott Boulevard.

The Riverwalk lower walking paths and Marina area, from 8th Street to the Marina, will be closed until it is deemed safe to access those areas. Citizens are strongly encouraged not to go into any area that has standing water.

Marina Road will be closed to only local traffic for that area.

Citizens should take the necessary steps to have an evacuation plan for themselves and their family if the need to evacuate quickly. Have a box of important documents, such as birth certificates, insurance cards, social security cards, emergency contact information and medications, ready to take with you.

More information will be provided as it becomes available. Citizens can sign up for emergency notifications on the City of Augusta's website under Emergency Notification. If you are in an area that is flooding, please report that information to 911 Dispatch at 706-821-1080.
