Remembering One of Jefferson County's Finest

Jefferson County, Ga -

For more than 20 years he served the citizens of Jefferson County.  WJBF News Channel 6's Barclay Bishop remembers the life of Major Charles Gibbons.

"I just couldn't believe, I said, ‘Are you sure? Are you telling me the truth?' And he said, 'Yes, sir,'" Jefferson County Sheriff, Gary Hutchins, describes the moment that he found out his work partner had passed away.

Shock is the only way Jefferson County Sheriff, Gary Hutchins, can describe how he felt when he heard the news that one of his best friends and partner, 61 year-old, Major Charles Gibbons, had passed away from a heart attack.

"It was tough, tough for all of the secretaries and people who worked close with him," said Hutchins.

Hutchins could not hold back his emotions - as he remembered that first Monday he walked in to work, and knew his partner would never return to the office that was next to his for the past 21 years.

"We always shook hands every morning, hugged the neck or whatever," said Hutchins.  "We talked about family or whatever concerns of the county, we always had about 30 minutes every morning."

Besides the love for his wife and 3 sons, concerns for the county remained a top priority of Gibbons'.

"His concern was people working together, everybody, whatever race it was, and get in one mind to know that we are working for one goal," said Hutchins.

As the flags outside of the sheriff's office hang at half staff, and black ribbons dawn the doors in his honor, there is no denying that Major Gibbons leaves a strong legacy in Jefferson County.  One that his family and friends will never forget.

"The family is going to have a tough time going through it, and we're going to retire his number that day.  He is just what you call a true blue friend," said Hutchins.
