COLUMBIA, S.C. -

For one Upstate child, the dream of being a princess came true this week thanks to the Miss South Carolina Pageant.

Neely Thompson was just 2-years-old when her immune system started attacking her brain.  But you'd never guess she was dealing with such a medical condition watching her rehearse for her part in Tuesday's opening number.

This week, Neely is representing the Greenville Children's Hospital as a princess.  It's an experience Neely's mom says they are thankful for.

"I think every 6-year-old dreams of being a princess, so being able to put on a fancy dress and a beautiful crown has been a wonderful experience for Neely," Christy Thompson explains.  "But I think the best part for us as a family is being exposed to other families and being able to share Neely's story with them."

Neely's family hopes her time as a princess will help raise more awareness about needs at children's hospitals around the state.
