Augusta Bus Decision Stalls

Posted: Updated:

A commission committee debating today on whether or not to move forward with hiring a Texas company to run the bus system.

But the committee couldn't vote due to the lack of members present.

Mobility was hired in 2011 and is out at the end of July.

Commissioner Marion Williams was complaining about the city not acting sooner -- prompting this exchange with City Administrator Fred Russell, who is officially on vacation.

"Just because you're wearing your sneaker shoes today Mr. Russell to me that's not vacation, said Williams.

Russell attempted to interrupt by signaling the committee chairman, which Williams did not like.

"I'm talking I'm talking Mister Russell at least give me that much respect you might not respect me much more than that give me that much now you might not like what I'm saying," said Williams.

The full commission votes next week and if McDonald Transit Services isn't hired the options are not good for Augusta.

The city could ask Mobility to stay on extra time, the company however filed a lawsuit over being let go,  of the city could get back into the bus business and run the system on an emergency basis, or the city could shut down bus service all together.
