SALISBURY, N.C. -

Authorities say a man has drowned in the South Yadkin River after trying to rescue another man and his dog who were swept into the river while trying to walk over a dam.

Rescuers said the incident started Saturday afternoon as the man, carrying his dog, tried to walk across the dam as water rushed over it at the Cooleemee River Park.

Authorities say the current swept the man and dog in and 45-year-old Steven Tankskey and three others tried to rescue them.

Officials say rescuers were able to reach everyone except Tankskey. His body was found downstream several hours later.
