If you drive down the Calhoun's street in Pendleton, one thing stands out. Their shutters are pink and they've got a pretty good reason for it.
"I painted the shutters because pink is the universal color for cancer survivors," said Robin Calhoun.
And Robin is one of them. In February 2012, she was diagnosed with Stage IV Lymphoma.
"It's like getting punched in the stomach and the rug pulled out at the same time," said Robin.
It also meant aggressive chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant and plenty of medical bills. Robin is now in remission. She says her insurance provider, Coventry Health, covered everything, except for one bill that kept lingering.
Robin says the bill listed the wrong code so her insurance didn't pay it. She called AnMed Health.
"She said that what she would do was resubmit it to Coventry with the correct code," said Robin.
That was May 2012. After that, she got another bill and another one. Robin says she went back and forth between AnMed and Coventry for months, trying to settle the remaining $510 balance due.
"It's like I survived everything else," said Robin. "And this is almost worse than the chemo sessions, trying to get somebody to help me to get the code fixed."
We reached out to Coventry and AnMed about Robin's bill. They couldn't discuss specifics because of privacy reasons, but quickly acted on her request.
"AnMed Health maintains an active follow-up program with all insurance carriers. However, because resolution often requires coordination among physician, hospital and payor, these delays are sometimes lengthy," said Spokesperson Kari Lutz.
And the delay is now over for Robin.
"They resolved the coding issue," Robin told us after receiving a call from Coventry and AnMed Monday morning.
She says she was told the payment was now processing and that a check would be sent to AnMed Thursday.
AnMed Health says to avoid delays patients should pay close attention to your Explanation of Benefits or EOB statement. You typically will get that before the actual bill.
If you notice an error in the EOB, notify your medical and insurance provider right away.
If you have insurance through your employer, your human resources department may also be a good resource to helping you resolve an issue.
