Folt begins job as chancellor of UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

New Chancellor Carol L. Folt officially begins her job at the University of North Carolina today.

Folt, the former interim president of Dartmouth College, was elected the 11th chancellor of UNC earlier this year by the Board of Governors.

"Over the past three decades, Carol Folt has accumulated a wealth of academic and leadership experience at one of the top-10 universities in America. At each step along the way, she has proven herself to be an engaged and effective leader who promotes openness and collaboration, strategic thinking and creative problem-solving, and an unwavering commitment to academic excellence and student success," said UNC President Tom Ross.

Folt succeeds Holden Thorp, who announced in September that he would step down from his post beginning June 30. She is the first female chancellor to lead Carolina.

Thorp was the chancellor at UNC for five years. He took the job as provost for Washington University in St. Louis.
