Nearly 1 million expected to drive for July 4th

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

AAA Carolinas expects nearly a million North Carolina motorists will travel for the Independence Day holiday, slightly less than for the same period last year.

The motor club says the change is the result of a shorter holiday period and higher gas prices.

Last year, July 4 fell on a Wednesday, creating a six-day holiday travel period compared to five days this year. The extended holiday period last year resulted in a higher travel forecast.

Although gas prices have remained mostly flat for the past two months, they are 8 percent higher than Independence Day 2012. The average for unleaded regular gas is $3.44, compared to $3.18 on July 4, 2012.

Charlotte has the most expensive gas in the state at $3.49. The cheapest is in High Point at $3.33.
