Raleigh Same-sex couples celebrate, push for more change

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Joy and love filled Raleigh's Pullen Memorial Baptist Church on Wednesday night, hours after the Supreme Court's landmark decisions on same-sex marriage.  Equality NC hosted the gathering.

"Gay Americans, Lesbian Americans are no longer considered second class citizens and we're entitled to federal benefits just like heterosexual married couples," Terri Beck said.

It was both a celebration and a call to action.  Wednesday's rulings did nothing to change North Carolina's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

Nick Poulson and Don Davis have been engaged for two years.

"And even if we were to get married in a state like Maryland, when we come back here and it wouldn't be recognized, so things still aren't quite right here," Poulson said.

That's how Jeff Evans and Dave Parnell feel about it too.  They've been together for 24 years.  They married in Vermont last year.

"We want to turn North Carolina around," Parnell said.  "We want to get rid of these amendments and discriminatory laws that are unconstitutional."

Wednesday, the high court recognized something they've known for decades, that their love is the same as everybody else's.

"I don't think it's any different," Evans said.  "We both grew up in straight households.  We both grew up in strong families, brothers sisters, married parents together for years and we learned by example."
