UPDATE June 24, 2013 at 12:420pm:

WJBF News Channel 6 has now learned the identity of Sunday's drowning victim at Lake Thurmond.

The body recovered was that of 26-year-old Billy Sims, Jr. of Augusta. He was an officer in the Navy.

According to coroner Vernon Collins the cause of death was "accidental death due to drowning".


UPDATE June 23, 2013 at 7:30pm:

Authorities on the scene say the body of an adult male has been recovered from the West Dam recreation swimming area.

According to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, the victim is a 27-year old soldier. The victim's name has not yet been identified.

The body was found shortly before 7:30 p.m.

WJBF News Channel Six has confirmed that the Columbia County EMA Dive Rescue and Recovery team has been called to a possible drowning at the West Dam recreation area.

That is near the Strom Thurmond Visitor's Center.

The call came in around 6:30 Saturday night.

Details are very limited at this time. WJBF News Channel Six has a crew headed to the scene. We will bring you updates as they come into the newsroom.
