After recent rains, one local family is still in over their heads with nearly eight feet of water that flooded their yard.
They called WJBF for help and we helped them make the right calls.
The homeowner says, after you get started, getting help isn't necessarily hard.
"Not if you open your mouth and ask questions," Patty Rabon says. "If this person can't help you, maybe they can take you to the next person."
And today there were a lot of people out of the office and into the field, all trying to figure out one question- how to fix a flood. Mike Casey has worked with Edgefield Emergency Management for 30 years, he's seen a lot, but this one has him stuck.
"This is probably one of the worst examples of flooding I've seen," Casey says. "This is the 100 year flood."
The homeowner isn't just concerned that it's ugly; it is also buggy.
"There are tadpoles, there are frogs, big deal," Eddie Woods says. "But there's snakes and now rats. I don't need it, the neighborhood doesn't need it."
Local leaders trudged through the woods to walk around the water. They looked at everything from the trees to topographical maps. What they found was a lot of question.
"Where's the water coming from and why's it pooling up," State Senator Shane Massey asks.
"What are you going to do with the water," Casey adds. "You pump it out of the property owners here, do you put it on somebody else's property? That's not a solution, that's putting a Band-Aid on it."
It would have to be a big Band-Aid: More than a quarter of the property is underwater. These local leaders say they're going take what they learned on their trek to the next level.
"We've got an open line to DOT, to the people that have pieces in the game," Edgefield County Councilman Rodney Ashcraft says.
"They're not being passed off, at this point there's nothing to do to help, so you pass them to someone who can help," Clifton White of SC DOT adds.
Can - that's the word they want to hear.
"To be honest, I don't hear what you can't do, I just wanna hear what you can do about it," Rabon says.
