NCDOT hosts talks on deaths on railroad tracks

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Transportation officials are joining law enforcement and community leaders in a discussion of the significant number of deaths on North Carolina's railroad tracks in 2012.

The Rail Safety Summit is scheduled for Thursday and is sponsored by the N.C. Department of Transportation. Officials are slated to discuss ways to improve rail safety education and discourage distracted drivers and trespassers on and around railroad tracks.

The summit is the next step in a collaborative effort that began with a Rail Safety Roundtable Secretary Tony Tata led in February with industry leaders.

Amtrak Police Chief Polly Hanson is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.

So far this year, 15 people have died on the tracks, compared to 18 fatalities during all of 2012.
