Too Long Augusta Commission Meetings Seen As Problem

Posted: Updated:

Augusta Commissioners are getting tired of too much talking at meetings. Tuesday's meeting ran on so long, Commissioners were leaving and missing votes.

Some are saying too many items are being added to the agenda and they're being discussed too long.

For example, Commissioner Marion Williams added three items to Tuesday's agenda for discussion. "I've been trying to bring some common sense to the Commission. I've been trying to bring some self worth. I'm trying to make people be accountable, so if that's distraction, then there's going to be distraction because the people voted for someone to ask those hard questions," says Williams, not apologizing for his actions.

"I think, now, we're totally distracted. We're distracted by putting things on the agenda over and over again that can be dealt with within departments. It doesn't have to be put on the agenda every week, or every other week. I do think it's causing an impact and it's a negative impact on the commission," says Mayor Pro-Tem Corey Johnson.

Because committee meetings are also running so late Commissioner Bill Lockett, whose committee meets last, wants to rotate the schedule...calling that "only fair".

So far, Lockett's fellow Commissioners have said no.
