The Chatham County Sheriff's Office says an inmate faces charges for attacking a corrections officer just before 11 p.m. Sunday at the county detention center.
The Sheriff's Office say Officer Meeks was working in one of the housing units when inmate Derek Rogers began telling him the phones weren't working. The officer attempted to try and get to the bottom of the situation by asking the inmate what was going on. Agitation turned to aggression when Rogers crossed over on to the platform that serves as the officer's work station and physically assaulted the officer. Officer Meeks gave the inmate several directives to stand down but he refused. Officer Meeks was immediately assisted by other nearby officers.
Officer Meeks was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Inmate Rodgers has been charged with felony obstruction of an officer with harm/injury. His original charges, from Port Wentworth were all for misdemeanors.
