Former Greenbrier Star to Make MLB Debut

Posted: Updated:

Former Greenbrier pitching star Brandon Cumpton will make his major league debut on Saturday. He's getting the start for the Pittsburgh Pirates in their game against the Dodgers, first pitch is at 4:05 p.m.

The Georgia Tech alum was a 9th round pick of the Pirates in the 2010 MLB Draft. In 65 1/3 innings with their Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis, Cumpton has a 3.31 ERA with 49 strikeouts and 22 walks.

Cumpton is obviously excited about the call-up according to "I'm awed right now. I don't know what to think. I'm sure it'll settle in some time later maybe. … They told me last night after the game, we were down in Durham, North Carolina. … I was shocked. I had no idea. I didn't see it coming at all. Blindsided by that (the call up). … It's going to be tough to hold back emotions the first time, but going to try to treat it like every start. Try to go out there and do what I do: try to throw strikes and put the ball on the ground."

Cumpton is replacing injured starter A.J. Burnett.
