Bill legalizes gaming nights for nonprofits

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Nonprofit groups could host fundraisers in the style of a Las Vegas casino night under a bill in the North Carolina House.

The measure in the House Judiciary Committee would allow nonprofits to host fundraisers featuring poker, craps and other games at hotels, restaurants and other locations.

Both the nonprofits and hosting facilities would be subject to limits on how often they hold events and couldn't give out cash prizes.

Lodging, restaurant and nonprofit groups say the bill helps businesses and tax-exempt groups with well-regulated events that are already going on in many parts of the state. Opponents say the measure invites for-profit gaming companies who will push fewer and fewer gambling restrictions.

A restaurant and lodging lobbyist says the bill is scheduled for a committee debate Wednesday.
