FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -
A Fayetteville man is charged with scamming the Red Cross
out of $283, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.
David Lee Skipper, 23, is charged with obtaining property by
false pretense after he told the Highland Chapter of the Red Cross that his
home had burned down. The residence indeed burned on May 12, but Skipper and
his family had not lived there since Feb. 8.
The Red Cross compensated Skipper for food and two hotel
rooms for two nights stay in the sum of $283.
Skipper was already being held in the Cumberland County
Detention Center on unrelated charges under a $10,000 bond; bringing his total
bond to $15,000.
