Drowning death of teen in Cary highlights pool safety

CARY, N.C. -

With school out for summer and temperatures in the 90s, people are packing the pools. It's a great way to stay cool, but safety experts say it's important to remember to stay safe.

13-year-old Kayla Hall died after being pulled from the pool at Scottish Hills Rec Club in Cary.

Her tragic death is a sad reminder of how dangerous pools can be.

Barry Porter, regional executive director at the American Red Cross triangle area chapter, says the Red Cross is constantly training new lifeguards.

"Drowning can happen very quickly. It's only going to take a few minutes under the water until breathing is disrupted for a child or someone who doesn't know how to swim, or even someone who is cable of swimming," he said.

He said lifeguards are a vital part of keeping people safe as they swim. But at many pools, especially in neighborhoods, there is no one officially on duty to keep an eye out.

So who is the lifeguard in those situations?

"It really is the parent if they're present," said Porter.

Porter said another skill you may want to consider learning is CPR.

"We really try to stress that one person in each family should be trained. If you're going to the pool, you ought to have the skills to save a life in an emergency," Porter said.
